In the course of ones travels rarely is found a more delightful combination of elegance, comfort and hospitality as at Chateau de Saint Maclou in Upper Normandy, France. The English innkeepers, Robin and Nicola Gage, are the epitome of attentive and thoughtful hosts.

The chateau is conveniently located not far from Honfleur in a beautiful setting of green fields with horses grazing in the distance. The chateau itself is a well maintained example of 17th century architecture with a...

Le Crot Foulot village, L FieldI’d seen the photos of this place on the Karen Brown website, but only really came to appreciate what it offers when we stayed there a few weeks ago. First, in casual conversation about the care that the owners had taken with the chunky timber beams throughout, I was amazed to learn that these are the original beams, carefu...

We booked two rooms two days prior to our stay based on Karen Brown recommendations and could not have been more pleased. La Maison des Chanoines is extremely charming, clean, and very tastefully and comfortably appointed, and is reasonably priced. It is surrounded by lovely, fragrant flowers all around. The owner/chef in the attached restaurant is outstanding and we highly recommend indulging in the prix fixe dinner. The town is also charming and interesting with its palace sitting at the top o...

Absolutely wonderful! It is everything you could ask for in a french chateau. Beautifully decorated, the grounds are gorgeous, comfortable rooms, updated bathrooms. Robin was a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome. We would absolutely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone. Good location if you want to visit the D-Day beaches and Honfleur.

Chez Burckel de Tell in Calvisson, France is enchanting. What makes it special to us is the welcome and helpfulness of the hosts, Corinne and Regis, the beauty of their historic village house, the original art, the lovely bedrooms, plus the delightful shared spaces: the breakfast room, music room, and rooftop terrace. We find Calvisson to be a village of interest and convenience, close to Nimes, Arles, Avignon, Uzes, and some fine swimming beaches.

My husband and I spent two delightful nights at the Bastide Avellane. The Bastide is very comfortable, with simple but charming furnishings. The evening meals, served outside if the weather permits, were delicious and there is an excellent wine list. The couple who run the Bastide, Steve and Valentina, were extremely welcoming and friendly and ensured we had everything we needed or wanted. We will certainly return.

About 12 minutes from the center of town, a few uphill hairpin turns and VOILÀ you arrive at the charming B&B La Colline. We traveled with a friend so we stayed in different rooms that were equally as nice. Only two nights were all that were available or we would have surely stayed longer. The earlier reviews pretty well nailed it. Sylvie & Thierry are consummate hosts. They could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The food (all of it home-made and prepared mostly from local vegetables, milk, cheese and meat) was really extraordinary. It matched or surpassed our experience in the best restaurants we visited in France, except that we had the added pleasure of having Sylvie & Thierry at the table. Their home, is likewise extraordinary--a beautiful and expansive stone building...

Recently spent a great weekend at La Girarde in the Gironde area of France. We first found the property on this site and it turned out to perfectly suit our needs. We were travelling from Sarlat to Bordeaux and wanted a relaxing stay in between. The owners have done a masterful job of renovating the stone house, and have tastefully furnished each of the four rooms. We ate there each evening and enjoyed gourmet meals, beautifully presented. We have stayed in B&Bs in France over 8 years of trips and Moulin de Fresquet stands out as one of our favorites. Claude and Girard could not have been more welcoming, kind and informative. Our room was comfortable and so quiet - with a lovely view of the mill stream. But over and above these accolades, the dinners were the best we had the entire trip - and in fact, we were lost and yearning the one night they did not serve. Four courses of wonderful fresh food paired with local wines and a char...

If you want to experience a stay in a real country chateau, Chateau Messey is a lovely warm environment created by the owners – Delphine and Markus Schaeffer. They provide very personalized attention. Do have dinner cooked by Markus as often as you can. Delphine was a great source for exploring the area. The last time we were in Champagne, we stayed in Reims and pretty much limited our experience to the city and the wine houses there. This time, we decided to venture out and boy are we glad we did.

Our search led us to a marvelous B&B in the small village of Villers Agron (a few miles west of Epernay and on the edge of the marvelous Route de la Champagne) – Manoir de la Semoigne – where our hosts Christine and Xavier Ferry pulled out all the stops to make our visit most memorable.

This place was a true find! 10 minutes from CDG. M. Clement came to pick us up at the airport and drove us to his lovely home in the country; Garden, lawn, outside table and chairs. Our ’room’ was in fact a small cottage across a courtyard from his place. We had an elegant king sized bed and large bathroom upstairs and a living room downstairs. The best part was the delicious 5 course meal that he prepared for us and served at our private table a deux in our living room. He is an excellent co...

This is a very special B&B, a 17th/18th century chateau that has been meticulously renovated and transformed by the owners Johan and Pieter. Our party took the two ’rooms,’ which were spacious and well-appointed enough to be called suites. (The property also has two ’suites,’ which must be large indeed!) The property is beautifully managed - inside and out, with beautiful gardens outside and lovely furnishing in. The common areas are large; and the hosts encourage their guests to take...

Had a great weekend at this B&B last week. We stayed 3 nights over the weekend and were not disappointed at all. The attention to detail is remarkable and the food is amazing. We visited the surrounding areas in the morning and enjoyed the garden with large pool in the afternoon, perfect holidays. The 4 course welcome dinner on the night of arrival was prepared to the highest standard. Great taste, presentation and great wine to match the food. It felt like they had been in business for ...

Our stay at Chateau de Vouilly began with a warm welcome from James who was a thoroughly gracious host throughout our stay.

Our room was large and comfortable with a lovely view over the ancient moat of the formal garden and orangerie beyond. Other highlights included some lovely old ’country French’ furniture throughout the chateau, much of it made by James’ father, that will appeal to woodworkers and decorators alike. The breakfast room was sunny and bright and the well provis...

We recently spent a delightful 3 days at the Bastide Rose, using it as a base for exploring Avignon, Orange, and the hill area of Provence northeast of Orange. The accommodations were wonderful - our suite was roomy, clean, comfortable, and specially decorated; the bathroom was great with space and a shower/bath tub. The room looked out through big Provencial shutters to a beautiful property with garden, stream/canal, and its own island. Poppy Salinger was a wonderful, attentive host and her s...

Staying at Villa de Mazamet was one of the highlights of a two week visit to France. We usually stay near Carcassonne but decided to try something new and what a wonderful find. Peter and Mark are incredible hosts and have renovated a lovely villa in the most tasteful and elegant way. I would say their attention to detail throughout the property is second to any I have found at this type of lodging. We were struck by how peaceful and tranquil the grounds are in a city setting. Mas De Cornud is a must do stop for anyone exploring Provenance. St Remy is a picture perfect village and the house is driving distance to all the main attractions. The only problem is that you will not want to leave. The house is lovely with clean, bright rooms and very comfortable beds. The breakfast was divine and the pool and spa where a lovely treat in the evenings. We can not recommend this house and it’s wonderful hosts highly enough.

I went to Mas de Garrigue last weekend for a birthday weekend getaway! My boyfriend and 3 friends came with me and we honestly had one of the best holidays ever.
Sarah and Steve are absolutely charming hosts who go out of their way to make your stay as peaceful and fun as possible.

The 15th century hunting lodge has been lovingly and perfectly restored with just the right balance between history & luxury. The rooms are airy and cool when the sun is beating down and the...

We visited this B&B on May 10th for 2 nights and totally enjoyed the experience. Christine and Gerard welcome you into their home with kindness and generosity. They want you to enjoy your stay. We had the green room with our own patio. The room was well decorated with an en suite bathroom, including a wonderful tub as well as a shower. The bathroom had all modern conveniences and amenities.

We stayed four nights in Le Vieux Relais in May 2012. Our spacious top floor room was clean and the bed large and comfortable. We would have preferred the twin with fireplace one floor down. Val and Mike who hail from England were very helpful in giving directions and advice. They also arranged a day long wine tour for us. Mike and Val are a very good chefs who will prepare an evening meal every day but Tuesday. The area near Carcassonne is worth a visit.

Since many years we like to visit high quality B&B’s such as described in Karen Brown guidebooks mainly in France, Italy and England. The stay at the Domaine St.Pierre de Trapel is definitely our favorite! There are several reasons for this: Catherine and Christoph are most charming hosts which make you feel at home. After our arrival we had the chance to attend a wine tasting degustation from Christoph. Very interesting and also entertaining. In the following days we drank some of the ver...

We travelled with 4 adults together celebrating our anniversaries and Bastide Rose could not have been a better place to stay. The rooms were large and comfortable. Poppy was such a gracious hostess and made us feel like family! She was happy to give advice on day trips and her knowledge of the area is extensive. Another highlight were the dinners cooked by Emmanuel. They were magical! My sister-in-law compared all the rest of our meals to those made by Emmanuel and really there was no compar...

What a fabulous time we’ve had at La Parare! In the midst of a month in France and Italy, La Parare has been our favorite place to stay. It is well-removed from the high-density, touristy places of the region around Nice, but not so out of the way that you can’t easily get to them, if you wish. Karin and Sydney have done an excellent job renovating an old farm complex in Chateauneuf Villiveille, in the hills above Contes. They have an eye for calming, comfortable decor and furnishings. The description in Karen Brown is fairly accurate, cannot disagree. It is situated in the flat valley part of Luberon and is pretty center to all the other hill towns you want to go to and you can pretty much get there in 30 minutes. That is an achievement considering all the narrow and winding roads and the small road signs. I was in Provence for 14 days and this one is quite a nice choice. I will stay there again anytime if I go to Luberon. Mr Jean Pierre, like all bed and breakfast owners,...

Kathy & Martin and Ruby dog welcome you into their beautiful home like long lost friends. We have stayed 6 or 7 times now and each time it just gets better with veg from Martins plot, eggs from ’the Girls’ and wonderful food cooked and served by Kathy. Dinner on the terrace on a summers evening after a lazy sunny afternoon spent in the swimming pool and drinking the local wine is one of my favourite things in this world! We stumbled upon this charming B&B on our frequent travels to the South of France, and it quickly became our favourite, so much that it is not just a stop over anymore, but often a holiday destination on its own. Kathy and Martin are fabulous hosts and make you feel so welcome that all travelling tiredness just slips away and it is easy to forget that you just spent hours in the car. In the summer we spend the afternoons relaxing in the garden on comfortable deck chairs under the huge trees, w...

From the moment my husband and I arrived at this delightful B&B in a small town near Chateauroux, we felt at home! Martin and Kathy, aided by a gentle and lovable dog named Ruby, were informal, gracious hosts who welcomed us into a restored house that was surrounded by gardens and a lush treed lawn. To be served a glass of wine as we relaxed in the backyard gazebo was a true treat! Our room was lovely and well furnished, overlooking the backyard, with thick quilts and comfortable pillows that...

We found the B & B on the internet and had a wonderful exchange via email that made us feel comfortable reserving our room. When we arrived Kathy & Martin were warm and friendly and made us feel like we were at home. They were very knowledgeable about the local attractions and flexible with our schedule. Our 5 year old loved Kathy and Martin because they were so wonderful to her. We miss them and can't wait to visit them again!

Last summer we have visited several B and B’s in France. We have been at the most wonderful locations. Thinking about Chateau de Ternay, a very original place to stay and a spooky but friendly landlord. Then we came at Celon, at the duck with the red umbrella. A nice and old farmhouse. The place looked exact like the foto’s on the internet. The charm of the house is what we found back in the owners. Martin and Kathy know how to make the visitors feel welcome. The house, the rooms and the grounds...

A wonderful location, but not a three star hotel -- carpets were torn and dirty, bath towels were paper thin, the only toilet item provided was a discount hotel sytle bar of soap, no robes, and the plastic chairs in the outdoor terrace area were filthy. The hotel does require that you eat there during the high season. However, the menu to which you are given access is very limited. For example, there were three main dishes two of which (rabbit and kidneys) had very limited appeal. Since the ...

La Chaine d’Or in Les Andelys offers a restful spot on the bank of the Seine. It’s not that far from Paris but it seems like the world of the Impressionists as barges glide by outside the large windows. We have stayed in over 20 of Karen’s recommendations for accommodations in France over the past 16 years and this was one of the most spectacular. The Comte and Comtesse de Roquefeuil were gracious hosts and made us feel completely at home. We stayed in the Nelly Room, which was beautifully appointed and included a small spare bedroom. From the minute you turn into the park and its curving road, past the gate-keeper’s lodge, past the sheep grazing under the huge old trees, and arriving at the white gravel courtyard of Chateau de la Barre you enter into a different time-space. My wife and I stayed for two nights at the chateau in July 2008 and agree entirely with Christopher Smith’s comments. Alix and Vincent are charming and friendly hosts. This is a genuine family home in a genuine French Château and was a highlight of our holiday. It is easy to forget a standard chain hotel but fond memories of the château remain long after the visit. On the practical side our room was enormous and characterful. Carcassonne is an easy drive away.

Chez Burckel de Tell is a beautiful and welcoming bed and breakfast. The accommodations were comfortable, clean, generous and lovely. The hosts were helpful, friendly, and respectful. Corinne is a wealth of information about the area and speaks good English. We enjoyed the personal touches such as the fresh lilacs in our suite, the beautiful art that makes the space unique, and the dining recommendations. I would happily return to Chez Burckel de Tell if I am ever in the area again.

We again extensively used your guide as we travelled through France for a month. La Vaulte in Saumur was lovely -- the owners could not have been nicer (champagne reception since they knew it was our anniversary), wonderful conversation, exquisite grounds and just perfect. Their dog Ava helped cured my 8 year old twin's homesickness for their dog at home. Upon our departure Helga gave us a centieme for good luck and kissed both the children on the cheeks. This lodging is on our A++++ list.

Staying at Le Crot Foulot was a simply delightful experience. It’s location makes it an ideal stop-over if you are travelling within France as it is a short hop from the autoroute, but a world away. It’s location in a tranquil hamlet in the midst of vineyards and fields of sunflowers quickly eases the tired eyes of weary travellers. The house itself is a delight - outside a traditional stone house, inside an eclectic mix of modern, miminalstic design and stripped old beams. The beds were supreme...

Although the welcome we received from the Fleitous was perfectly charming we did not think that the B&B was particularly good value for money. Indeed we found it to be rather expensive and felt a little diddled. Our fault in part; we forgot to ask the room rates when booking and somehow ended up with what appeared to be the most expensive room, even though it did not look as though anyone else was staying at the time. Also, although the actual house and gardens are lovely, it is not a particular...

Jacqueline and Jean were great company, Jacqueline’s cooking was wonderful and Jean would get up at 5am to make the Pain au chocolat. We have stayed at many of your recommended hotels and B&B’s and loved every one. I think you should add to the description of Manoir de La Semoigne in France that the bathroom is open to the bedroom with just a cotton pull curtain for privacy. This didn’t bother us too much but it might be a shock for some! We loved the spot and would highly recommend it so I would rate it a 5.

You always dream of finding the perfect small hotel off the beaten track in France but very rarely do you find it. This is it and I agree with all the comments made by the earlier reviewer.
The owners Anna and Abel were charming and helpful when we booked, gave excellent directions - they are needed as the Manoir is very secluded - and gave us a warm welcome when we arrived. Our room was charming with beautiful, thoughtful and tasteful touches everywhere and good plumbing. We had booked in...

We were made to feel so welcome by our hosts Laraine and Sean. We had a very nice large ground floor room that overlooked the gardens. The real reason to want to come back here again and again was the food. The highlight of each day was to see what we going to have for dinner. This was the best meals that we have had in two trips to France.

It’s a snowy evening here in Michigan and as I enjoy another Peter Mayle novel I am reminded of our lovely stay last summer at Le Mas de Cante-Perdrix.

The sanctuary of being inside the boundary of wall and evergreens that protects the yard of the mas from the road was my first impression. The crunch of the gravel drive and parking area. Then, the pool--sparkling in the sun. Oh that pool was delightful! So fresh and such a beautiful color. Rows of lavender. Roses,...

Boules on the lawn, swimming in the pool, cooking with Nito in the incredible indoor/outdoor kitchen, breakfast in the garden, and side trips to charming St. Remy. We want to go back!

I believe you should consider staying at this really terrific place, Mas de Cornud, in St. Remy, a few miles out of les Baux. I highly recommend it. It also is a cooking school which is a major plus; even if you are uninterested in learning, it is an amazing kitchen and Nito is a fabulous and enthusiastic chef. What’s cooking? The best in-depth view of the real Provence! We have taken about 10 different cooking lessons from Nito over the years, we always learn a lot. But equally great is sharing the food and David’s well-chosen wine with the other students and hosts afterwards! You get behind those hedges that screen (substantial) country homes in France. This needs to be a planned event on the itineraries of serious travelers.

This was the best and most memorable B&B I have stayed in, partly due to the charm of the secluded farmstead, but mostly to the charming Dutch couple. We were the only guests in November and enjoyed a fabulous gourmet French meal with the couple in their gorgeous kitchen. The room was light and cheerful with a little balcony. This is an excellent property, well run by the owners (Peter and Marc). The owners are very helpful with suggestions on how to enjoy the area. (Don’t miss Albi, recommended and for good reason.) Since the Villa de Mazamet is not air conditioned, an open bedroom window on at least one side of the building can have some bothersome street noise. The only negative other than street noise is the dinner menu. Whilst very well prepared and served, our dinner contained cheese in each course. (goat ch...

Villa Port d’Attache, Vallauris, France, Vallauris Villa Le Port d’Attache: A Karen Brown Recommended B & B   Villa Le Port d’Attache

Vallauris (Provence-Alps-Côte d’Azur)

Perched high above the town of Vallauris, with a view of the sea in the distance to the south as well as the snow-covered Alps to the east, Port d’Attache is a find. We stayed two nights in the Mistral room, one of four chambres in the house, each with its own bathroom and each full of character. Each we looked into was spotless and well appointed, ours having a lovely little patio area that proved a perfect spot for late afternoon reading and a glass of wine. The owner and innkeeper is ...

Villa Port d'Attache is a jewel find nestled in the hills high above Antibes. The view from the patio and most of the rooms of the Bay of Nice is a spectacular sight. The lush gardens and grounds of grape vines, fruit and olive trees are well manicured and maintained. There's even a pool to cool off in at the end of a hot day of sightseeing. The rooms are elegantly but simply furnished with lovely period pieces hand picked by the owner Gillian Lecadre. The bathrooms are spacious and mode...

A wonderful place to stay. I was not to thrilled with the restaurant next door (note: the restaurant is not affiliated with the hotel), it does not open till 1900 hundred hours, the food was ok., but i absolutely can recommend this great hotel.

Karen Brown did it again...this little hotel was exceptional! The location was perfect, the rooms and baths were spotless, the price was just right even with the strong Euro, and the staff was wonderful. It is centrally located on the wine route which makes day trips easy in any direction, whether you are driving, biking or walking. We would stay there again and again....We highly recommend Hotel Winzenberg.

Right on the wine road, short drives to any other town. The hotel is very charming with all modern baths. Alexia and her staff do everything possible to make your stay memorable. There are several great places to where the staff will make reservations. The winery next door that is associated with the hotel had some of the best white wines we tasted during our trip. There could not have been a better place to stay.
