- A Traveler Recommendation:
Among my many European travels, I have visited La Royante multiple times during the past decade. Located just outside of Marseille, France in Aubagne-en Provence, this magnificent Chambres d’hôtes – Bed and Breakfast, the former summer home of a Bishop of Marseille, is rich in history and beauty. The spacious rooms are equipped with all the modern conveniences and accommodations expected by world travelers. My favorite room is Sacristie with is rough-hewn ceiling beams, fireplace and wonderfully large bath. A most unexpected treat was the original chapel with its stained glass windows and small alter that I was invited to access from my room. This lovely villa is surrounded by lush gardens, cherry and olive trees and is nestled into one of the many surrounding hillsides. A large outdoor swimming pool, wonderfully fresh local food and the overall experience is graced by the unsurpassed hospitality of the owners, Bernard and Xénia Saltiel. With easy access to the charming town of Aubagne-en-Provence and Marseille’s Le Vieux Havre, one can readily tour Provence from La Royante. With its rich history, delightful towns and magnificent scenery, Bernard and Xénia have helped me plan numerous tours ranging from visits to the market in Aix-en-Provence where the Route de Cezanne leads one to the top of Mount Ste. Victoire with spectacular views of the countryside to Moustiers Ste-Marie’s fields of lavender and the breathtaking sites one finds visiting the Gorge de Verdon, the Grand Canyon of Provence. For visits to the Mediterranean, the delightful town of Cassis is an easy drive where one can tour the Calanques “the fiords” by boat along the coast. No trip to Provence is complete without a tour along the Côte d’Azure and the many back road tours that Bernard arranged for me. Bernard and Xénia have repeatedly provided me with special views of the countryside I would have never seen without their help. I can’t wait to return to La Royante!
