- Karen Brown's Recommendation:
The Inn at Whitewing Farm, spread over 43 pastoral acres in southern Chester County, is a delight in any season. It is close to many of the area’s attractions including the adjacent Longwood Gardens, the Winterthur Museum, and the Brandywine River Museum with its exhibits of the paintings of the Wyeth family. Whitewing, whose core is an 18th-century farmhouse, is actually a cluster of buildings in which there are seven bedrooms and three suites, all meticulously decorated rooms that provide a feeling of being an overnight guest at a friend’s horse farm in the picturesque countryside. The suites enjoy fireplaces and comfortable sitting areas. A new barn houses a common room on the second floor, a marvelously warm room with burgundy-painted walls, and a dining room on the first floor with individual tables set in front of a fireplace and windows looking out onto the landscape. The stables have been converted into bedrooms, which are smaller than some of the newer suites. One building has three bedrooms so that family or friends can be together. The inn serves a full breakfast—you’ll need it for all there is to do in the area and on the property where guests have the use of tennis courts, and a swimming pool.
