- Karen Brown's Recommendation:
L.L. Bean introduced outlet shopping to Freeport and numerous retailers have followed with their offerings housed in the quaint buildings lining the charming village streets. The Harraseeket Inn, built in 1895, boasts a longer history of welcoming travelers who have simply sought the beauty of Maine and gracious warmth of this inn’s hospitality. A town where the Harraseeket River meets the Casco Bay, this is a sportsmen’s paradise. As a novice, you can take advantage of L.L. Bean’s outdoor discovery schools that teach kayaking, fly casting, archer and day shoots—returning at day’s end to the luxury and comfort of an elegant hotel. With two dining rooms, The Maine Dining Room is located beyond the elegant entry and tempts travelers with a menu committed to local and organic produce and wild regional specialties, complimented by an incredible wine list. The Broad Arrow Tavern is more casual, painted a cozy green with a hunting theme décor—the centerpiece being the moose head. Handsome fabrics and reproduction pieces decorate the comfortable, well-appointed guestrooms. I especially loved #203 that enjoys a cozy bedroom warmed by a pot belly stove that steps up from the entry sitting room and a wonderful bath with large Jacuzzi tub. Although, the hotel boasts 84 rooms, it feels more intimate with the personal attention of the hotel’s incredible staff.
