- Karen Brown's Recommendation:
Haute Provence is a beautiful region of rugged terrain and villages of warm sandstone buildings and tiled roofs, nestled between the Riviera, the Alps, and Provence. The Bastide du Calalou was built in the shadow of Moissac to match the village architecturally and blend beautifully into the landscape. Monsieur and Madame Vandevyver keep the property clean, the public areas fresh, the garden immaculately groomed, and the terrace swept. The Vandevyvers extend a gracious welcome and their staff is accommodating. The bedrooms are freshly decorated, simple with antique furnishings in their decor, and have very comfortable beds and modern bathrooms. The rooms look out over the swimming pool to spectacular valley views or open onto a private terrace. You can dine either in the glass-enclosed restaurant, a smaller, more intimate dining room, or on the garden terrace. An idyllic spot, this is a wonderful hotel from which to explore the region or simply settle in and enjoy a few days’ escape.
The Bastide du Calalou is situated in the middle of the Verdon National Park. Surrounded by gardens, with views over the Aups Valley and to the mountains of Estérel, the hotel is starting point for excursions to the old villages of the Haut Var, the gorges of Verdon and Lake Sainte-Croix. The antique furniture blends harmoniously with the welcoming character of the country house which also has other objets dÙart, engravings and paintings. The uncomplicated authentic cuisine offers a tempting culinary experience.
