Portugal
Montanhas
Overview:
Montanhas (The Mountains) is a large, remote region in the northeast corner of Portugal with snow-capped mountains, dense forests, and valleys strewn with mighty rocks. Here you find fascinating scenery, historic old villages, and prehistoric archaeological sites, including the newly discovered prehistoric drawings etched into the rocks in a remote valley near Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Because it is isolated, many old traditions, customs, and festivals remain. There is a strong Celtic influence in the songs and dances. If you just deviate slightly from the main roads, you discover tiny hamlets untouched by time. The most beautiful section of the Douro River, whose banks are covered with vineyards, stretches across the center of the region.
SIGHTSEEING: Bragança, Lamego, Vila Nova de Foz Cõa, Vila Real.
HANDICRAFTS: Embroidery, ceramics, black pottery, lace, copper, wrought iron.
