Liguria
Overview:
LIGURIA: Liguria is best known for its Riviera tourism. The Ponente coast, including the flower capital of Italy, San Remo, is a highlight of this region. The gardens of Ventimiglia and the villages of Alassio, Albenga, Cervo, Dolceacqua, and Taggia are also worth visiting. Of course one must also visit the Levante coast which has stolen the spotlight with such gems as Portofino, Camogli, San Fruttuoso abbey, Santa Margherita, and the very popular stretch of hill towns above the sea called Cinque Terre. We also love “Poet’s Gulf,” just south of the Cinque Terre where you find the charming fishing villages of Tellaro, San Terenzo, and Fiascherino. The hilly and mountainous inland areas, which give the region its verdant reputation, have yet-to-be-discovered villages (such as Uscio), and offer quiet havens from the more popular coastal destinations. A mountain excursion can be taken to Santo Stefano d’Aveto, an hour and a half’s drive from the coast. Gastronomic specialties: Focaccia pizza using its famed olive oil, delectable pesto sauces, and many seafood specialties are common here.
