Italy
Lazio
Overview:
It is only in the past decade or so that foreigners have begun to explore and appreciate the many historic, artistic, and natural wonders of the Lazio region, home to the nation’s capital city Rome. Highlights of this region include the fascinating world of the Etruscans with more than 30 sites, a comprehensive archaeology museum in Tarquinia, and well-preserved tombs in the area of Tarquinia and Cerveteri. Lazio is home to many famous gardens including the Tivoli and the extraordinary gardens and fountains of Villa d’Este. In addition, one of Italy’s best-preserved Renaissance gardens, the Villa Lante, is also in Lazio. This region also boasts picturesque lakes. Lakes to the north of Rome include Bracciano, Bolsena, and Vico; and to the south are lakes Nemi and Albano. Rieti, backed by the Terminillo mountains and the scenic Sabine mountain area, is perfect for those seeking spots off the beaten path. Our favorite seaside attractions are the charming fishing villages on the islands of Ponza and Ventotene, plus the coast from Circeo to Gaeta. Gastronomic specialties: Top-rated olive oil, which rivals that of Tuscany and Puglia, is made in Riete.
