Campania
Overview:
CAMPANIA: The Campania region, hugging the Tyrrhenian coast, is squeezed between its four neighbors: Lazio, Molise, Apulia, and Basilicata. With the country’s third-major city, Naples, as its capital, Campania boasts one of the most famous coastlines in the world: the Amalfi Coast. The restored historic center of Naples (with its Piazza del Plebiscito, Palazzo Reale, Galleria Umberto, San Francesco di Paola, San Gennaro, Piazza Mercato, and Piazza Garibaldi) is definitely the highlight of this region. Nearby Naples, the archaeological sites of Pompeii, Paestum, Herculaneum, Capua, and Velia are also a must-see. Santa Maria di Castellabate and Acciaroli are two favorite towns on the Cilento coast south of the Amalfi Coast. This coastal area offers lovely, quiet, seaside resorts. Campania also boasts many gorgeous islands. After seeing the famed Capri, try lesser-known islands with more local flavor such as Ischia (specializing in thermal spas) and Procida. Gastronomic specialties: Campania is home of fresh Buffalo mozzarella from Paestum, pizza from Naples, and spaghetti with clams.
