Italy
Apulia
Overview:
Apulia is a delightful surprise with unique scenery barely resembling that which you see in the rest of Italy. Over the centuries it was invaded by Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Swedes, Aragonesi, Spaniards, and Saraceni, all of whom left their mark on the land. There are many castles in Apulia including: Castel del Monte, di Trani, d’Otranto, and di Copertino. Octagonal-shaped Castel del Monte is the most impressive of the buildings commissioned by Frederick II. This region is also home to Gargano Peninsula National Park, which is heavily forested and has scenic beaches. Our favorite towns to explore are Vieste and Monte San’Angelo. You must also visit the whitewashed towns of Ostini, Alberobello, and Locorotondo, the touristic heart of the region and home to the trulli (whimsical-looking, cone-shaped houses). Located on the “heel” of the boot, and not to be forgotten, are the beautiful baroque cathedral cities of Lecce, San Matteo, Santa Chiara, and Santa Croce. Gastronomic specialties: Olive oil and wine (which are strong and full-flavored), various cheeses from sheep’s milk; local ear-shaped pasta (called orecchiette), seafood dishes with mussels; fava beans and chicory are all found in the region.
