Slovenia
Overview:
A member of the European Union utilizing the Euro as its currency, the Republic of Slovenia is only 20 years removed from membership in the socialistic state of Yugoslavia led by Tito. The country is quickly embracing tourism and the welcome extended by the Slovenians is warm and genuine.
From winter sports in the mountains to the warmer climes of the vacation destinations along the Mediterranean Slovenia has a lot to offer packaged in a small area. It is also said to be located on "the sunny side of the Alps!" Highlights of the country include the highly photogenic Lake Bled, the impressive natural beauty of Postojna and Skocjan Caves (a UNESCO natural world heritage site), the burgeoning wine regions of Primorska, Posavje and Podravje, and the warm waters along Slovenia’s Mediterranean coast and the charming walled port city of Piran. Also a visit to the old center of the picturesque capital city of Ljubliana as well as visits to the culturally important city of Mirabor and the oldest city of Slovenia, Ptuj, should be on everyone’s list. For horse lovers the Lipica Stud Farm, with its museum and classic riding school is a must to view the famous Lipizzaner Horses.
