Ireland
Ulster
Overview:
Six of Ulster's nine counties, Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry, Down and Armagh, make up Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom. The remaining three, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, belong to the Reupublic of Ireland. The United Kingdom counties measure distance in miles and the currency is Pound Sterling while the Irish counties in Ulster, as well as the rest of Ireland, utilize kilometers and Euros.
The northernmost reaches of Ireland hold special appeal. Herein lies the countryside that
inspired the moving poetry of William Butler Yeats. Beyond Donegal, narrow roads twist
and turn around the wild, rugged coastline of County Donegal, where villagers weave
their tweeds and Irish is often the spoken language and that written on the signposts. The
Folk Village Museum at Glencolumbkille, with its authentically furnished, thatch-topped
cottages, demonstrates the harsh living conditions of the far north. Crossing into Northern
Ireland, the honeycomb columns of the Giant’s Causeway signpost the Antrim coast full
of cliffs, lush green headlands, and beautiful views.
