Karen's Review Of This Property:
This is Victorian at its best. The James House is one of Port Townsend's best-loved period homes, poised dramatically bluff-side in a residential neighborhood designated a National Historic District for its outstanding show of finely restored Victorians. Whether from the front porch or the third floor, views of the water, the Olympics, the Cascades, and Mount Rainier are breathtaking. We took two rooms at the top: Mount Rainier Suite and Bay. The Rainier Suite has a noble feel, with handsome mahogany bed and dramatic arched windows overlooking the water. The Bay Room, painted in pastel yellows with white trim and pale-blue accents, has a queen feather bed in an Eastlake oak frame, and was a perfect perch from which to watch the boats sail by. All rooms are spacious with excellent beds, lots of windows, and good, though modest, bathrooms. A second-floor Master Suite, with sitting room, fireplace, and private balcony, is especially well done. Notice the architectural artistry: the elaborate staircase; the newel posts; the ceiling medallions; the parquet floors made of individually cut oak, walnut, and cherry; the intricate carving. Door hinges and hardware are ornately carved brass. Most importantly, this is a well-run country inn with a very friendly staff.
