If you are looking for a place to stay in the heart of Mendocino that absolutely oozes decadent Victorian charm, then the Whitegate Inn is definitely for you. This clapboard home, built in 1883, is set off from the sidewalk by a white picket fence and, of course, a white gate. Inside, you step into an elegant home of the 19th century brimming with decorative Victorian antiques. To the right of the entry hall there is a parlor whose decor perfectly captures the Victorian era, with an Oriental carpet, crystal chandelier, elaborate furniture, gilt mirrors, ornate lamps, fancy drapes, bouquets of fresh flowers, and the owners’ collection of silver, Staffordshire dogs and Victorian chintz china. The parlor opens to a formal dining room where a gourmet breakfast is presented each morning on a beautifully set table using fine china and silver. The guestrooms capture the same elegant Victorian mood with antique beds piled high with pillows and made with luxurious linens, featherbeds and down comforters on queen and king-sized beds. All rooms have a wood-burning or gas fireplaces, with snug en suite bathrooms (two with jet tubs), cable TV/DVD (complimentary library of movies) and wireless internet. Enjoy the peace and quiet of this location just a block away from the heart of town.

Directions: From the junction with Hwy 128 drive 9 miles north on Hwy 1 to Mendocino. Turn west at the stoplight (Little Lake Road) then left on Howard Street for two blocks.
