Wheatleigh offers an escape from reality amid comfort and understated elegance. Set on 22 acres overlooking the Berkshire mountains and lake, Wheatleigh is built in the style of a 16th-century Italian palazzo. Renovations sport a handsome, modern look and contrast attractively with the columns and details of old. The guestrooms set a new standard of style and sophistication. The smallest guestroom is a studio unit with built-in bed and small but convenient bath, perfect for a teenager or single occupant. By contrast, the Terrace Suite is segmented in three parts and flows dramatically from one room to the next—the bedroom flows into an enclosed glass patio sitting area and onto its own terrace where dramatic Italian columns frame the garden terrace and view. Another striking room on the second floor, a junior suite, has been renovated to continue the circular design incorporated into the entry. The bed is set center stage facing the fireplace, while a sofa whose back cleverly serves as the headboard affords views of the sun setting over the lake and mountains. For dining you can choose a fixed-price meal in the elegant, internationally acclaimed Fine Dining Room with its magnificent glass-enclosed portico or lighter fare in the more informal Library.

Directions: At the junction of Rtes 7 and 183 on the outskirts of Lenox, turn onto 183 south, Walker St. After almost 3 miles the road forks soon after Tanglewood’s main gate—take the left fork (a continuation of 183 south). After 1/10 mile turn left on Hawthorne Rd.
