Karen's Review Of This Property:
The Summerwood Inn, with its nostalgic charm of a lovely country English-style home, makes an ideal choice if you want to stop en route between San Francisco and Southern California. Its setting is superb—nestled in a spectacularly beautiful area of gently rolling hills, either covered with vineyards or dotted with oak trees. You enter the long, low, white frame home with its old-fashioned wraparound porch and overhanging roof through large double doors into a spacious entry hall. To the left is a formal dining room, to the right is a sun-filled living room—bright and cheerful with sofas and chairs covered in colorful English-style fabrics. In the morning guests can choose from five items on the breakfast menu. Wine and cheese are served in the afternoon, coffee or tea and a dessert at night. The guestrooms, all large and individually decorated, have a mood of comfortable elegance. Each bedroom has either a private terrace or balcony that looks out over the Summerwood vineyards (my personal favorites are the rooms in the rear that have the most expansive views) and a beautifully appointed bathroom. All of the rooms have their own gas log fireplaces. The adjacent Summerwood Winery has a gift shop and offers wine tasting. The inn makes a good base for visiting Hearst Castle, which is just a short drive away by a scenic road.
