The Yorke Arms nestles beside the village green in Ramsgill, a handful of houses and farms and a tiny church. This delightful Nidderdale hostelry (one of Yorkshire’s quietest and most attractive dales) is now a foodie haven (Michelin star) where Francis Atkins and her brigade perform culinary magic. Francis’s husband Bill mans the traditional bar in an evening where a handful of locals come for a drink. There’s plenty of old-world charm: flagstone floors, traditional bars, and a comfortable dining room with high-backed Windsor chairs, an old dresser gleaming with pewter, and a blazing log fires. Knowing you deserve the best request one of the suites two especially large rooms: Gouthwaite twin or king-bedded and Longside with its grand four-poster bed. Like all the bedrooms they are decorated in soft pastels each accompanied by a top of the line marble bathroom. Loft, set under the eaves with its large tub for two in the bedroom, stands out as a particularly memorable bedroom. You can take beautiful walks from the restaurant, which vary in length from strolls by the local reservoir to daylong hikes over the moorlands. The ruins of nearby Fountains Abbey are an awesome sight and medieval York and the 18th-century spa town of Harrogate are popular day trips.
