Karen's Review Of This Property:
Bordering the market square in the center of the village, this traditional old Yorkshire coaching inn, part of which dates back to Tudor times, has served travelers well for a couple of hundred years. More recently it has expanded into two old adjoining properties—a classic Georgian house and a black-and-white Tudor rectory. A wing of rooms has been added next to the lovely back garden with its tables and chairs for sunny days on the patio outside the bar. Bedrooms overlooking the marketplace have lots of old world charm. As might be expected, the modern rooms in the stone wing extending to the rear are identical in size, each with French doors that open to either a balcony or tiny patio. Toast your toes by the fire in the cozy little parlor, partake of a traditional afternoon tea in the tearoom and enjoy the conviviality of the bar before going in to dinner. Helmsley has interesting shops, an ancient market cross (market day Friday) and a Norman castle. The most popular places to visit are Rievaulx Abbey, York, Castle Howard, Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby, and the folk museum at Hutton-le-Hole.
