Karen's Review Of This Property:
As you walk directly into the oak-paneled hall, you catch the spirit of this lovely house with its enormous stone fireplace, ornate stone-mullioned windows, and plump sofas enticing you to sit and relax. The dark-oak paneling, carvings, ornate plasterwork ceilings, family portraits and Jacobean furniture are the grand embellishments added by Lewtrenchard Manor’s most famous owner, the Reverend Sabine Baring Gould, composer of many well-known hymns. Speculation has it that George Bernard Shaw based Pygmalion on the Reverend and his wife Grace. An illiterate Yorkshire mill girl when they first met, Gould sent her away to be educated before they married. His portrait hangs in the front hall, Grace’s is in the back dining room. Upstairs the lovely bedrooms are all different, with the most popular being those off the broad upstairs hallway. The Bridal Tower occupies a separate turret in the garden. Within an easy drive are Castle Drogo, a fanciful Lutyens house, the Lost Gardens of Helligan, the Eden Project, Lydford Gorge, Dartington Glass, wild Dartmoor, and the north and south coasts of Devon.
