Karen's Review Of This Property:
Set just off the market place across from the historic church, the Spread Eagle dates back to 1430 and has been welcoming guests ever since. Now completely renovated and restored, the hotel retains a wealth of period architecture. Several of the premier “feature” bedrooms located in the older parts of the building are named after prior patrons such as H. G. Wells, Hilaire Belloc, and even Queen Elizabeth I. Our favorites were Egremont, a most spacious room, with its very tall four-poster bed, and the elegantly panelled White Room, both with large, well-appointed bathrooms. Other smaller but no less comfortable rooms are in a modern wing sympathetically designed to meld with its older surroundings. Meals are served in the dining room with its Flemish stained glass windows, massive open fireplace, and Christmas puddings hanging from the beams. Enjoy a quiet pre-dinner drink by the fire in the classically English bar or indulge yourself with a special treatment in the impressive on-site health spa, exercise in the gym, or relax in the magnificent indoor pool. This very attractive hotel makes a good base for visiting Chichester, Fishbourne Roman palace, Petworth House, and the Weald and Downland open-air museum.
