Karen's Review Of This Property:
Gravetye is a truly handsome Elizabethan manor house set in the most glorious of gardens. It is one of our favorite English country house hotels. You catch the spirit of the place as soon as you walk into the oak-paneled hall with its big fireplace and inviting armchairs. The lovely sitting room with its enormous stone fireplace has the same atmosphere of age-old welcome and comfort. Bedrooms are elegantly furnished with soft-toned fabrics, which contrast warmly with intricately carved wood paneling. Firescreens hide televisions and interesting books are close at hand. You will love the acres of gardens flourishing just as former owner William Robinson, who pioneered the natural look in English gardens, would have wished them to. His beloved kitchen garden has been restored and chef Mark Raffan puts its produce to good use. Other glorious English gardens within easy driving distance include Sissinghurst and Sheffield Park. Nearby is Standen, one of the finest Arts and Crafts houses, with furnishings by Morris and Benson. It’s a very handy place to stay for both Glyndebourne and Gatwick airport.
