Karen's Review Of This Property:
Hartwell offers you the opportunity to stay in a stately home that was the residence of the exiled King Louis XVIII of France who lived here for five years beginning in 1809. Grand, gorgeous public rooms are yours to enjoy, including the great hall, the paneled oak bar, the morning room, the drawing room and the library. Imaginative food is enjoyed in the dining room, composed of several adjoining rooms that overlook the garden. A dramatic staircase with its Jacobean carved figures leads to thirty gracious bedrooms. First-floor bedrooms, named after the court of Louis XVIII, who occupied them, are the largest, and the corner rooms are all four-posters. The second floor bedrooms are cozier; some of them open onto a sheltered roof terrace where rabbits were reared and vegetables grown by the French émigrés. Additional lovely bedrooms are found in the stable building adjacent to the conference center and Hartwell Spa with its spacious indoor swimming pool, gym and beauty salons. A path leads into the walled garden, which houses two tennis courts. The surrounding parkland with its ruined church, pavilion, and lake is perfect for long country walks. Oxford is just 20 miles away and Heathrow airport is less than an hour’s drive.
