Karen's Review Of This Property:
On a rocky spit of land almost surrounded by water, the whitewashed Eilean Iarmain hotel, a Harris Tweed shop and a huddle of cottages face Isle Ornsay, a tiny island whose lighthouse was built by Robert Louis Stephenson’s grandfather. Across the sound mountains tumble directly into the sea, adding a wild, end-of-the-earth feel. The Eilean Iarmain (pronounced “Ellen Earman”) is quite delightful. Chintz chairs add a homey touch to the cozy parlor and in the dining room you find that the menu is in Gaelic, thankfully with an English translation (the staff speak Gaelic and English). A tartan-patterned carpet leads up the pine stairs to six bedrooms. They have varied tariffs to match the great variety of size and decor: room 2 has a canopied half-tester bed that once resided in Armadale Castle; the turret room is paneled in mellow pine and has a seating area in the turret. More rooms are found in the cottage across the road. In addition there are four luxurious suites with sitting room and bathroom downstairs and bedroom upstairs. Step out of the front door of the hotel and round the side and you find yourself in the old-fashioned pub (bar meals are served) where locals gather—on Thursday evenings they often bring their instruments. Be sure to visit Armadale Castle.
