Karen's Review Of This Property:
Golfers will be enchanted with Greywalls because it is on the very edge of the Great Muirfield golf course founded in 1744. Even if you have no interest in the game, you will love this most beautiful of houses built in 1901 by Sir Edwin Lutyens and you will adore the gardens laid out like a series of rooms by Gertrude Jekyll. It was the Weaver family home until 1948 when they turned it into a hotel—family photos and letters decorate the ladies’ loo (perhaps they also adorn the gents’ too—I did not visit) and photos of famous guests, particularly golfers, are grouped around the reception area. The dining room overlooks the tenth tee. The lounges are especially attractive, particularly the paneled library with its interesting pictures, shelves of books, and open fireplace. The bar is most convivial. Edward VII used to stay here and, because he admired the view, a special outside loo-with-a-view was built for him near the garden wall: now it’s a suite called King’s Loo. Guests can choose it or from an array of equally delightful bedrooms which overlook either the flower-filled gardens or the golf course. Golfers have Muirfield as well as ten other courses nearby. Eighteen miles to the west lies Edinburgh.
