Karen's Review Of This Property:
Tucked in an unspoilt valley high above the hustle and bustle of the well-known Lake District tourist routes, this traditional pub lies surrounded by the ruggedly beautiful Lakeland scenery. Built of local slate in 1872 as a resting place for travelers, the hostelry is still a base for tourists, many of whom come here for the walking. They gather by the bar, the sound of their hiking boots echoing against the slate floor, poring over maps and discussing the day’s activities. By contrast, the carpeted and curtained dining room and lounge with its comfy chairs seem very sedate. The Stephenson family pride themselves on the quality of their food and offer home-cooked fare served in the dining room or the bar—I was pleased to see a selection of vegetarian dishes, as well as beef-and-ale pie and Cumberland sausages on the menu. Bedrooms maintain the character of a 19th-century inn with those at the front enjoying superlative countryside views—I particularly liked room 3. For travelers who enjoy tastefully decorated, country-style, bedrooms with modern bathrooms, the Three Shires fits the bill. Just a few miles away are some of the Lake District’s most popular villages: Hawkshead (home of Beatrix Potter) , Ambleside, Coniston, and Grasmere.
