The Peacock
A Karen Brown New Discovery

Karen's Review Of This Property:
Dating back to the mid-1600’s The Peacock was originally built as a Manor House by John Stevenson. Once the Dower House for Haddon Hall and still part of the Haddon Estate, its name derives from the Peacock in the Rutland Family coat of arms. The hotel has more recently been sympathetically renovated and restored as a classic country house hotel. Stone mullioned, leaded-light windows rub shoulders with antique furniture from nearby Haddon Hall and Belvoir (pronounced “beaver”) Castle. Exposed wood beams, open fireplace and comfortable furnishings complete the picture. The dining room and snug bar feature “mouseman” wooden tables and chairs, locally produced in Kilburn, by not only the original Mousey Thompson but also his son. See if you can find the small critter carved into your chair and ask about the difference in styles. The hotel grounds lead down to the River Wye home to sizeable rainbow trout. Fishing can be arranged for hotel guests. It’s a 2½ mile walk to Chatsworth House (10% discount) through lovely countryside while Haddon Hall (50% discount) lies just 1½ miles up the road. It’s a perfect central location for exploring the most interesting villages in the Peak District National Park.
