Karen's Review Of This Property:
If you like places off the beaten path, you will love the Hotel St. Petersinsel, a romantic inn built in a 12th-century monastery on an island in Lake Bienne. Many famous guests have visited here, including Jean Jacques Rousseau, Josephine Bonaparte, and Goethe. If you arrive on a sunny weekend, you might dispute that this hotel is “off the beaten path” because this bit of paradise is well-known to the Swiss who arrive by the hundreds by bicycle, foot, or boat to enjoy a delicious, home-cooked meal in the courtyard of the monastery. However, with only 13 guestrooms, the hotel cannot accommodate many guests, so in the evening, the island once again assumes its utter tranquility. There are no roads to the monastery. You can come on foot (about an hour’s walk from Erlach) along a scenic path that meanders through low lying reeds—a nature reserve filled with all sorts of birds, deer, and fox. But, with luggage, your best bet is to take a boat from Erlach (when making reservations, ask for time schedules and details as to where to board the ferry). The romantic monastery sits in the middle of a meadow with paths beckoning you to explore the nearby forests. All the guestrooms are charming, some are decorated with antiques, and some with modern furniture. My favorite is the corner room with two canopy beds—it is a real winner.
