Karen's Review Of This Property:
From the moment you arrive in Sils-Maria and spot the massive Hotel Waldhaus with its towers, turrets, and crenellated roof dominating the hill above the town, it is immediately apparent that we have deviated from our norm of featuring only small hotels. Inside, the ambiance of grandeur deepens with a spacious reception area that opens onto a stunning drawing room ending in a spectacular bay window looking out to the forest. One lovely room leads to another: cozy sitting nooks, a sweet library, two dining rooms, intimate reading rooms, tearooms, music rooms—all decorated in classic turn of the twentieth century style. Due to the hotel’s supreme position overlooking lakes, mountains, and forests, each tastefully decorated guestroom has a view. Incredibly, even with all this grandeur, the Waldhaus exudes the warmth of a small hotel. It has been in the same family since it was built in 1908, the fourth generation maintaining the original standard of hospitality and attention to guests’ needs. According to director, Felix Dietrich, the family’s policy is to provide five-star hotel amenities and comforts combined with the warmth and welcome of a tiny pension. This, plus a combination of splendor and relaxed friendliness, is precisely what makes this hotel so special. Free pickup for guests arriving by train at St. Moritz station. Free passes to regional buses, trains, and cable cars are included in summer and fall rates.
Swiss Historic Hotel's Description:
High above the lakeside landscape of the Engadine sits the legendary Sils Maria Waldhaus, or forest lodge, which has been owned by the same family since 1908. This hotel radiates the grandeur of its original age, and is a cultural treasure trove. The innovative approach of the host family and the unceremonious warmth of their welcome make this hotel almost irresistible.
