It’s hard to do justice to the many attributes of Hotel Claris in the space available. The expansive, marble-floored lobby, its copper-fronted reception desk of white poplar burl, and the interior waterfall and reflecting pool are merely harbingers of what is to come. Constructed around a glass-topped central atrium, natural light pervades throughout. Guest rooms are individually decorated, sumptuously appointed, and accented with the owner’s personal collection of original art and Egyptian antiques. Fresh flowers, monogrammed linens and towels, complimentary wine on arrival, and, for the suites, a daily selection of bath salts and body oils—for either relaxation or invigoration—is part of the turn down service. The rooftop gymnasium and pool offer spectacular views of the city, as does the glass-roofed terrace restaurant. On days when the weather is not conducive to dining al fresco, retreat to the stylish, ground-floor Bar and Restaurant East 47 featuring original artwork by Andy Warhol. A special, exclusive treat for hotel guests is free access to the owner’s private museum, containing an astonishing collection of Egyptian artifacts. Need wheels but don’t want the hassle of a rental car? . . . Borrow the courtesy car available gratis to guests (there is a small charge for fuel) on a half-day basis and take a self-guided tour of the city.
