Karen's Review Of This Property:
El Puerto de Santa María is a lovely port town located on the Bay of Cádiz. Columbus returned here from the new world on the Santa Maria. Home to commercial fishermen, restaurants and outdoor cafes feature a wonderful bounty of seafood. At the heart of town, situated on a lovely cobbled street lined with orange trees, the Hotel Monasterio San Miguel, commissioned in 1727 by the Duque of Medinaceli, was converted to a hotel just over a decade ago. In this wonderful old cloister built round a central courtyard and fountain with handsome tile floors, arched doorways, high-vaulted beamed ceilings, wrought-iron fixtures, heavy old wooden doors, a bounty of windows, and handsome furnishings, guests will enjoy both historical ambiance and modern-day comforts with personal and attentive service from its professional staff. We enjoyed a lovely two-room suite in the main house that overlooked the central courtyard. Also popular are the rooms in the adjacent, three-story addition with their own balconies and views over the pool and rooftops to the river. Under stone-arched ceilings, the restaurant, Las Bóvedas, offers exceptional cuisine. The more informal Les Capuchinas offers a very reasonable menu at tables located just off the cozy bar.
