Karen's Review Of This Property:

The Pousada de Vila Viçosa-D. João IV is a stunning pousada set within the former Convent of Chagas de Cristo, dating back to the 16th century. The location next to the Ducal Palace is ideal for exploring the town. At first glance the large square reception lounge might seem a bit sterile with its white walls and white marble floors. However, on second glance you realize that part of the floor is glass and if you look down, below you-spread out like a museum, are the ruins of a very old building that dates back far before this convent was built. As you proceed through the pousada you will notice that marble from nearby quarries is used extensively. The decorator-perfect public rooms display a sophisticated elegance, fine-quality fabrics, beautiful furniture, and accents of antiques. Although much renovation has taken place, the architects have cleverly incorporated some of the original artwork. Look carefully and you will see some of the original frescoes peeking through the new plaster. There is an exquisite cloister with the characteristic fountain and garden at the core of the hotel and many of the bedrooms are on corridors that wrap around this. All of the bedrooms are very large and, like the public rooms, furnished with great taste. As might be expected in a new pousada, there is also a large swimming pool.
