Looking for a place to break our journey from Portugal to Spain, we felt fortunate to discover the Forte de São Francisco Hotel. The hotel, an historic monument, is embraced by the walls of a castle fortress and its interior public areas incorporate the old cloister of a recently restored 16th-century convent. The fortress commands an imposing location above the old town of Chaves, the river, and surrounding hillside. Be sure to visit the citadel, the old streets of the main town, the spa, and thermal waters, and there is a wonderful half-hour walk along the River Tãmega and the Roman bridge. The hotel is a great place to settle in its own right. The pool is beautifully positioned up against the castle ruins and enjoys unobstructed views. The cozy tavern, its ceiling hung heavy with sausages (a regional specialty), serves light meals, while the elegant dining room is enclosed by glass so as not to obstruct the view. There is also a disco-bar. The 58 guestrooms are modern in their appointments, traditional with reproduction furnishings, and offer a very comfortable night’s sleep. Breakfast is offered as a buffet in the dining room or will be delivered to the privacy of your room.

Directions: Chaves is located at the junction of N103 and N2 just south of the Spanish border in northeastern Spain. Once in town, look up and navigate towards the castle walls and you will arrive at the gated entry to the hotel.
