Quinta das Sequoias is truly a jewel. This charming farm was obviously home to a family of means and the estate is still quite sizeable, almost 40 acres surrounding the manor house with its white façade, red-tiled roof, and cheerful green shutters. Inside, the home reeks of comfort and the hand of someone who loves her property. Candida González treats her guests as she would friends—her home is your home for the lucky few who snare a room. There is a cheerful living room (warmed by an open fire in winter) with French windows opening onto the garden. The breakfast room, which was once the kitchen, is picture-perfect, with an enormous open fireplace and a large table where guests gather family-style for breakfast. Breakfast is the only meal officially served, but for guests enjoying a lengthy stay, a light supper can be provided with advance notice. The individually decorated bedrooms are as pretty as can be, with fine antiques used throughout and lovely color-coordinated spreads and curtains. The setting is fairy-tale perfect—the manor looks across a wooded oasis to the stunning Pena Palace crowning the top of the opposite hill and out back over the valley to the blue waters of the Atlantic. There is a beautiful swimming pool in the garden.
