Karen's Review Of This Property:
This impressive pousada is installed in the São Filipe Castle, which was built in the 16th century to defend against a possible attack from the British armada. Today, perched high on a hilltop towering above Setúbal, it has a commanding view of the bay. Wind your way up to the impressive castle and leave your car outside the walls. From here, well-worn stone steps take you past a tiny blue-and-white-tiled chapel to the broad terrace where you find the reception area. Further flights of stone steps (no elevator) lead to the whitewashed bedrooms with high ceilings and walls thick enough to accommodate window seats. Large baths, red-tile floors, traditional carved-wood furniture and earth-tone, floral-print spreads and drapes combine to create extremely comfortable surroundings with a somewhat rustic flavor. Unfortunately, not all of the rooms have a view of the city and the bay—which is enchanting—so be sure to request one. Some of the rooms are small, former monastic cells, so also inquire about the size of the room. On the main level is a tiled lounge with well-worn, cozy furniture, a television, and a small bar. The restaurant is appealing, overlooking the sun-washed terrace and the sea, and specializes in superior regional cuisine. Note: A maze of narrow tunnels spider-web beneath the castle. Ask to see them as one was a secret escape route to the sea in case the castle was conquered.
