Karen's Review Of This Property:
Just a half-hour from Lisbon, the Albatroz is a delightful discovery, combining the charm of a country inn with the luxury of a five-star hotel. Originally a villa built in the 19th century for King Dom Manuel II, it has since been enlarged and renovated to provide its guests with quiet, understated elegance amid the bustle of old Cascais. The hotel is perched on a rocky outcropping that juts out into the beautiful Bay of Cascais. Small beaches snuggle below the rocks to each side of the hotel. In the original villa there are eleven bedrooms, a bar with a terrace overlooking the sea, and the excellent Albatroz restaurant—which is especially famous for its seafood. It is elegantly decorated in pale beige and white, and has a marble-and-wood floor. The bedrooms in the original villa have a charming old-world flavor, with high, sculpted ceilings and carved-stone windows—no two are alike in size or décor, but all are lovely and decorated with antiques. There are also bedrooms in the newer wing, which overlooks the oval swimming pool and beyond to the sea. These bedrooms are spacious and tastefully appointed, though more contemporary in style, decorated in soft colors and furnished in warm wood. They all have balconies so that you can step outside and enjoy the fresh air. There are also two suites and four superior rooms (all facing the sea) in a charming old villa just across the road.
