Karen's Review Of This Property:
Our favorite hotel inside the walls of medieval Óbidos, the Estalagem do Convento, was originally an early-19th-century convent. It was converted in the 20th century to a modest hostelry. It enjoys a relatively peaceful street-front location slightly removed from, but within easy walking distance of, the center of town. It also boasts the only really good restaurant in Óbidos, whose charming decor—heavy wood-beamed ceiling, red-tile floor and open stone fireplace—promises a pleasurable dining experience whether or not you are a guest in the hotel. As the popularity of Óbidos has grown, more rooms have been added to meet the needs of more tourists. Several of these have fabulous views of the city and castle. Although every room guarantees traditional flavor, only five are found in the original convent building, their beautifully preserved wood ceilings and unusual dimensions making them the most appealing. All of the bedrooms have high ceilings, textured whitewashed walls, tile floors, painted wrought-iron beds, and traditional dark-wood furniture. There is a sitting room upstairs with fireplace, a cozy bar open to the public, and an interior garden patio where guests can dine in fine weather. For simple, old-fashioned comfort and exceptionally friendly management, this inn offers an excellent value.
