The Pousada de Vila Nova de Cerveira-D. Diniz, named after the 14th-century king who fortified the town against Spanish aggression, is located in the cute town of Vila Nova de Cerveira, which hugs the banks of the River Minho as it makes its way to the Atlantic. The pousada is installed in the heart of the village. With the exception of the reception, which is housed in an old mansion, the inn is entirely built within the ancient ramparts. In fact, the pousada’s public rooms and guestrooms are incorporated into the original dwellings that, until 1975, were inhabited by townsfolk. Once you’ve settled in, don’t fail to visit the tiny, 13th-century chapel with its ornate painted ceiling and wood-slat floors. Just behind an old pillory is a pretty white-plaster and stone-framed building (previously the prison) containing the bar, lounge, and sitting rooms, with wood floors and cozy leather furniture. The spacious bedrooms are located in a cluster of remodeled village houses, and feature pale-wood, carved beds with woven wheat-colored spreads and windows with pretty white embroidered curtains. The restaurant is within still another building and its wall of windows allows beautiful views of the river. From the dining room, doors lead out to a large terrace, enclosed by the ramparts of the town.
