Karen's Review Of This Property:

The Pousada de Viana do Castelo is a luxurious, turn-of-the-century inn that shares a splendid hilltop (forested with pine and eucalyptus) with a dramatic pilgrimage church of the same name. They both also share a spectacular view of the small port town of Viana do Castelo, which hugs the banks of the River Lima. The large, pale-stone pousada is a majestic white building, which although not old, is traditional in style and beautifully constructed. The interior decor is outstanding—elegant yet welcoming and of such style that it rivals the finest hotels. This pousada is not old and stuffy, but fresh and airy, with grand-scale public rooms featuring splendid light-wood parquet floors, beautiful pastel-upholstered furniture, huge crystal chandeliers, and large windows to capture views of the town and estuary far below. The theme of taste and refined style is continued in the spacious bedrooms. Be sure to request one of the many rooms that overlook the church and river. The dining room and a wide verandah stretching the length of the pousada also enjoy the extensive panorama. In the garden there is a beautiful oval swimming pool encircled by trees. The Pousada de Viana do Castelo is more like a deluxe hotel than a typical pousada, but you will love it.

Directions: You cannot miss this one. It is perched on top of the hill, visible from everywhere in town. Just follow signs to Santa Luzia—the pousada is just beyond the church.
