Karen's Review Of This Property:

Valença do Minho, a charming walled medieval hill town whose castle dates back to the 13th century, stretches across a hilltop overlooking the River Minho, which divides Portugal from Spain. There is just one gate that leads through the thick walls of the fortress and into the quaint town where tiny, whitewashed houses huddle over narrow cobblestone streets. The Pousada de Valença do Minho-São Teotónio (named after Portugal’s first saint) huddles next to the thick stone ramparts and has a remarkable view across the river. The public rooms of the pousada are modern. The bright, airy lounge and bar are mostly furnished with tan leather chairs and sofas. The outdoor terrace features a fountain and overlooks cool, green lawn and old stone walls leading down to the riverbank. The same dramatic panorama is shared by the dining room with its floor-to-ceiling windows, which in the evening capture a view of the romantically illuminated castle perched across the river. Every bedroom also has a view, but not all have terraces. The guestrooms are comfortable (those with twin beds slightly larger), and all have large, tiled baths, parquet floors, and handcrafted, regional wood furniture.

Directions: Enter through the narrow gate into the old town, then continue following the one-way arrows through the town, then through a second gate. The pousada is well marked to the left of the road at the end of the second part of the village.
