The 16th-century Quinta do Convento da Franqueira is an absolute dream—it is no wonder that the father of the current owner, your gracious host Piers Gallie, was immediately captivated by the property. He bought it on first sight and brought his family from England to live here over 40 years ago. Captain Gallie restored the convent with loving care, meticulously retaining its wonderful architectural features while adding all of the modern amenities. The inn wraps around the cloister, testimony that in years gone by, this was the convent for the adjacent church. A flight of stairs leads to an exceptionally elegant, yet extremely comfortable living room where guests can relax, fix themselves a drink, and study the many books available about what to do and see in the region. There is an appealing ambiance throughout of an English country home. Each of the bedrooms is spacious and beautifully furnished with antiques. Utter tranquility prevails, with only wooded hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see. A path leads through the gardens to a spring-fed swimming pool nestled on the hill with a magnificent view of the convent and the church. Quinta do Convento da Franqueira is one of our favorites—truly a very special hideaway.
