Karen's Review Of This Property:
The Pousada de São Brás de Alportel, in the hills 3 kilometers above the village of São Brás, is one of Portugal’s earliest pousadas. Built in 1943 with only six guestrooms, it typified the small wayside inns that paved the way for the more elegant pousadas of today. Resembling a whitewashed manor house with red terracotta roof, it retains the flavor of a roadside inn, offering travelers a peaceful spot, removed from the heavily traveled coastal route, but still readily accessible to its activities. The hotel is surrounded by pine and eucalyptus and its bedrooms all have balconies and enjoy views overlooking São Brás, Faro, and the Atlantic in the distance. The pousada was closed for several years for a total renovation. The new look is fresh and pretty. No effort is made to create an antique ambiance, but rather a happy color scheme of crisp white and bright yellow is displayed throughout, beginning with the whitewashed exterior accented by yellow shutters. Inside, the mood is one of comfortable informality and good taste. The semicircular restaurant is locally popular, and has lovely views over the garden terrace and the countryside. On a terrace below the pousada is an excellent large swimming pool, a nice respite after a day of sightseeing. This is an excellent base for visiting the market town of Loulé, the white town of Montes Novos, and the ruins of Milreu.
