Karen's Review Of This Property:
Located just a couple of blocks off the main square, the Casa del Balam offers a nostalgic charm. This small hotel is so closely interwoven with the beginning of tourism in the Yucatán that it could not help winning a place in our hearts. Casa del Balam was built in the early 1900s as the private home of the Barbarchano family, pioneers of tourism. It all began when Señor Barbarchano, as a young man, picked up a number of guests from a ship and took them to see some Mayan ruins, originating the idea of sharing the Yucatán’s wonders with non-archaeologists. Now, three generations later, the Barbarchano family operates many of the region’s buses and tour companies and owns the majority of the hotels in prime locations, including this one in the heart of Mérida. There is nothing fancy or flashy about the Casa del Balam—this is just a good, old-fashioned hotel that has excellent management and exudes the faded glamour of bygone days. The best feature is the interior courtyard, highlighted by a stone fountain and surrounded by greenery and tables and chairs. Although there is a restaurant, you can be served in the courtyard, which is more romantic. All of the rooms are comfortable so there’s no need to splurge on a suite. I particularly liked 203 and 204, large rooms with wrought-iron headboards.
