If you yearn for unspoiled nature and fascinating archaeological sites, yet don’t want to sacrifice creature comforts, look no further than The Explorean, where sensual delights combine with superb, understated, casual elegance. That such superb luxury can be found so far off the beaten path is quite miraculous. The complex is designed in the style of a traditional Mayan village, but there the similarity ends. The reception area, bar, and restaurant, all open to the air under a high, thatched roof, look out to a stunning terrace—an architectural masterpiece. A long, fairly narrow swimming pool and a Jacuzzi hot tub stretch across the terrace, lined by white lounge chairs and umbrellas. What makes this extraordinary is that as you look out over a green expanse of lush jungle, the only structure you can see, if you look very closely, is the top of one of the pyramids of Kohunlich peeking out of the sea of green. Paths meander through the rich foliage, leading to the guestrooms, which are in thatched cottages tucked about the property. These are exceptionally spacious and beautifully furnished in elegant simplicity and all have a private terrace with sofa and hammock. As you might expect, such luxury isn’t cheap, but you do get value since the rate includes all meals, taxes, tips, drinks, cocktails, and even sightseeing excursions.
