The Riviera Maya is legendary for its immense hotel complexes where hoards of action-seeking tourists descend each week to eat, drink and make merry in the sun. A far cry from this is the ultra sumptuous Paraiso de La Bonita, an intimate hotel attracting guests who look for privacy, world class amenities, a glorious beach, fine food and excellent wines, the ultimate in service, and exceptional comfort. The security of the front gate might give the appearance of a formal hotel, but once you enter, magically the formality vanishes and you feel like a cherished guest in a superb home. The staff is incredible, from the superb manager, Lionel Álvarez (who mingles with and personally greets guests) to the waiters, bartenders, bellboys, and maids whose smiles are infectious. From the inside, walls open to gorgeous, impeccably manicured gardens and dazzling sea views. In décor, it is a virtual showplace of museum-quality antiques from around the world collected by the owners to decorate their hotel. Guestrooms are huge suites, each totally different in décor with themes of romantic, far-away places. The greatest asset of the Paraiso de La Bonita is the service. The staff anticipates your every whim—be it a romantic dinner in the wine cellar, a helicopter hop to archaeological sites, or an overnight yacht excursion.
