Casa de La Real Aduana Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

The Casa de La Real Aduana, a charming small hotel that opened in 2004, is the creation of two artists, Gemma Macouzet and Didier Dorval, who have exquisitely restored one of Pátzcuaro’s beautiful historic buildings into an intimate, exclusive, small hotel. Also on the premises is La Folia Arts Center where concerts, exhibits, and workshops are organized, along with a permanent international exhibition of photography, painting and sculpture. The Casa de La Real Aduana was built in the 16th century as a magnificent residence for the Spanish noblemen who were responsible for the Royal Customs during the Colony period. The hotel has a prime location in the heart of Pátzcuaro, half a block from the stunning Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, one of the most beautiful plazas in Mexico. The individually appointed guestrooms reflect the artistic talent of the owners—each is exquisitely decorated with antiques as well as modern pieces of art. Most of the guestrooms are named after famous composers. One of them is named for the Dorvals’ good friend Hugh Pissarro, a French painter who is the grandson of the great impressionist Camille Pissarro. A royal breakfast is served each morning in the lovely dinning room that displays such a rich selection of art that, like the rest of the house, you feel as if you are in a fine gallery. There is no restaurant, but on special request, dinner can be arranged.

This is by far the best place of all 5 hotels I stayed in on this trip. Everything in Karen Brown’s book is true and more. This is not only a nice place to stay but also a place to experience the warm welcome of the owners, the manicured gardens, the antiques and Didier’s music at breakfast. The room is very clean. The linens and towels are bright white and fresh. Nice hot tea and biscuits were brought into my room every afternoon. The breakfast is an exceptional experience in itself. Every morning Didier (Owner and a self proclaimed symphony director who plans to replace San Francisco’s MTT one day) would play the classical music in the dinner room with wood burning fireplace chasing away the morning chill. His relaxed and humorous character brought all the guests together to converse and enjoy the meal. Gemma, the lady owner, is a super chef. Her bouillabaisse leaves all the 2 star Michelin in Paris in the dust. A place I definitely will return. e mail me if you want more info (benkongphotos@yahoo.com).Ben Kong

We had a wonderful time at Casa de la Real Aduana. We were treated more like personal guests of Gemma and Didier and not just another group of hotel guests. The facilities themselves were tastefully and impeccably maintained, and the service was very discreet without being servile. Truly a most pleasurable oasis in the dry world of travel accommodations.
