Karen's Review Of This Property:
Hotel Los Juaninos’ central location, right across from the plaza and the cathedral, is perfect for exploring the streets of Morelia. This small boutique hotel with 33 rooms, once the Episcopal palace and then the Royal Hospital of San Juan de Dios, opened its doors in 1986, with major renovations taking place in the late 1990s. The lobby is enhanced by stained-glass windows, beamed ceiling, stone arches, numerous religious icons, floral bouquets, Victorian-style furniture, and a huge basket of colorful glass balls. A steel, freestanding elevator dominates the end of the entrance hall, but there is also a handsome curved stairway whose stone steps are well worn from centuries of use. The spacious bedrooms feature vaulted, wood-beam ceilings, wood floors, and lace curtains. One of our favorites, 214, is a junior suite with a view of the cathedral. Each floor looks out over a central courtyard, hacienda style, with wide passageways lined with finely carved doors and doorways framed in stone. On the rooftop, La Azotea, a renowned gourmet restaurant and bar with excellent regional cuisine, offers live music on weekends and lovely views of the plaza and church. Adjacent to the restaurant is an appealing small lounge, solely for the enjoyment of hotel guests. Morelia has many museums and fine examples of colonial architecture to discover, as well as markets where local handicrafts are sold.
