Karen's Review Of This Property:
The Virrey de Mendoza, a wonderful hotel exuding old-world refinement and understated elegance, has an unparalleled location looking across the picturesque Armas Square to Morelia’s exquisite cathedral. The original building was a simple stone home constructed in the 16th century but over the years it was greatly enhanced and became one of the most magnificent mansions in town. The hotel is built around an attractive three-story arcaded courtyard crowned by a beautiful large stained-glass skylight. The lobby has an air of stately grandeur, with a handsome Oriental carpet accenting a gorgeous parquet floor, a huge bouquet of flowers, fine oil paintings, potted palms, soft lighting, a grand piano, and intimate groupings of leather sofas and chairs. There is a romantic, formal dining room with rich paneling halfway up the walls, a beamed ceiling, and antique-style chandeliers. The rather compact standard bedrooms are all pleasantly decorated with traditional-style furniture and tasteful artwork. The suites are more spacious and many are decorated with lovely antiques. The quietest bedrooms overlook the interior courtyard, but those facing the street, although noisier, have more sunlight. For a splurge, request one of the five suites that face the cathedral—these have incredible views of the cathedral. At night, when the cathedral is gently illuminated, these suites are truly magical.
