Puerto Vallarta’s beaches are jammed with high-rise resorts catering to those seeking action. If instead you prefer an intimate hotel that exudes refinement, old world charm, genuine hospitality, and outstanding quality, the Hacienda San Angel reigns supreme. The hotel is not on the beach, but rather tucked up behind the church on a cobbled street in the heart of the Old Town. This gem was originally the private home of your hostess, Janice Chatterton. When she left Northern California and moved permanently to her Mexican hideaway, she began to expand her property. The first purchase was an adjacent lot where her dogs could romp. Gradually she added nearby houses, and her home just grew and grew, becoming the perfect size for a small hotel. Four houses (Casa Bursus, Casa San Angel, Casa La Joya and Casa Las Campanas) have been cleverly melded into a work of art, abounding with exquisite antiques that are beautifully displayed throughout the inn. Series of small patios and secluded terraces, enhanced by fountains and lush gardens, are tucked throughout the hacienda. There is also a delightful restaurant and three swimming pools, plus a heated Jacuzzi tub nestled in a rooftop sun terrace. The rooms vary in size from small to exceptionally grand in scale, but all have outstanding amenities such as fine linens with handmade lace, down pillows and wonderful mattresses.
