When the Hacienda Puerta Campeche opened in 2004 it added a new jewel to the superb group of hacienda hotels located on the Yucatán peninsula. Its four “sister” hotels (Hacienda Santa Rosa, Hacienda Temozón, Hacienda Tixkobob, and Hacienda Uayamón) are haciendas that have been converted into deluxe, intimate hotels. The Hacienda Puerta Campeche, unlike the others, is a not hacienda nor is it secluded in the countryside. Instead, the hotel is ensconced within the walls of a series of colorfully painted, 17th-century houses, blending so cleverly with the others on the street you would never dream a hotel is secreted within. Until you walk around the corner and find the discreet entrance, you might well think you had the wrong address. Once you step inside the magic begins. The hotel is like a work of art with the rooms created masterfully from the original small houses. Each spacious guestroom has deep-hued walls setting off handsome furniture. Each bathroom is exceptionally large and splendidly appointed. Adding to the perfection, skillful maids decorate the towels, bathrobes, bed linens, and vanities with intricate designs of fresh flowers. The guestrooms and dining room enclose an inner garden courtyard where another surprise awaits: Interconnecting stone walls of what once were homes, form a stunning swimming pool where you can swim through the doors from one room to the next.
