In the category of luxury boutique hotels in Venice, the Ca’Nigra emerges as a true winner. The Feron family purchased the 17th-century palazzo just across from their established hotel Ai Due Fanali, in our B&B guide, and brought back to life one of Venice’s most interesting properties. Centrally set on the Grand Canal in a quiet residential area, the striking burgundy home has two large, walled-in, arbored rose gardens and is lined on two sides by water. In fact you can pull your private boat right into a covered dock. With a sophisticated and more demanding traveler in mind, attention was given to the most modern technology available while enhancing the innate historic value of the residence. Walk right into the clean and contemporary main lobby with glass and lucite desk looking out to the side canal and up to 22 individually appointed junior suites with designer bathrooms, which blend the contemporary with the more classic Venetian style (Murano glass, speckled marble and mother of pearl floors, patterned parquet, damask fabrics) and accents of the Orient, so prevalent in the city’s historic past. The triumph is the loggia suite with bottle-glass windows and bed facing out to the Grand Canal. Among the many common spaces are the upstairs beamed and frescoed living room with fireplace, modern courtyard breakfast room/bar and terrace overlooking the garden.
